Jiyong Jin

Jiyong Jin is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Deputy Dean of School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Shanghai International Studies University, China. His research focuses on global health governance, health diplomacy and America’s biosecurity strategy.

Prof. Jin earned his Ph.D in Political Science from Fudan University in 2009. He was awarded Oxford-Princeton Global Leaders Fellowship in 2011. He was also awarded Fox International Fellowship by Yale University and studied at Yale from 2008 to 2009. Prof. Jin has been studying global health issues from a political perspective. He has published a dozen of papers on Biosecurity and Bioterrorism, Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law, Foreign Affairs Review.

Recognizing that tobacco consumption has become a leading cause for premature death worldwide, the international community, under the auspice of WHO, successfully developed the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) with unanimous adoption by the 192 member states in May 2003. It is the first time that the Organization has used its constitutional right to develop an internationally legal instrument in global health governance. Therefore, it is a seminal event in global health. It also represents an unprecedented collective action to curb the global tobacco epidemic. The convention came into force in February 2005.
