“What single measure would help to strengthen democracy in your country? Would an improvement in electoral integrity help?” Share with us what you think.
These questions are addressed in the recent report “Deepening Democracy: a Strategy for Improving the Integrity of Elections Worldwide”, published by the Global Commission on Elections, Democracy and Security, chaired by Kofi Annan. The report advocates recommendations at the national, transnational and international level to promote and protect the integrity of elections.
The analysis is compelling – as you would expect from such an eminent and experienced group of world leaders. However, I wonder what a generation of future leaders think about the recommendations? Are there other, better, newer ways to strengthen democracy and/or electoral integrity? How important are elections?
We would like to engage you in a debate about this – in a series of blog posts and comments. The blog will include contributions from the first ever cohort of students on the Blavatnik School of Government’s Master of Public Policy course, who originate from 19 different countries, as well as members of the Commission and scholars at Oxford and Cambridge.
Posts must not be longer than 800 words in length.
On 7 December, BSG will host a panel discussion on Deepening Democracy as part of the Challenges of Government Conference. Attendance of the panel discussion is open to participants in the Blavatnik School’s Information Afternoon, or you can participate online by registering for our WebEx feed via our website.
You can also participate in the debate using the Twitter hashtag #deepeningdemocracy.
